www.wrecks.net was started by a few friends
in April 1999. Initially, the site was created to help distribute
software for PCs and Palm PDAs. In 2001, wrecks.net expanded to
build a searchable database of maritime accidents using asp scripting and MS Sql
2000. In 2006, the website suffered a catastrophic lost when both
servers failed and backups were unable to restore the database.
Between 2006 and 2010, wrecks.net sat idle. Finally in 2009, wrecks.net
was brought back to life with a new database. The system was moved
to a MySql and .Net structure and uses a cloud service as backup.
Version 2010
Our newest version has set it's focus on the mobile platform. The entire site is designed to work on Android, iPhone and Blackberry phones. Also, we adopted using more open-source technologies to keep hosting costs minimal. July 2010, we began the use of social networking tools to encourage more collaborations
with other organizations.
